When I grow up....I want to make a difference!

All month, we have been discovering all of the things that are important to consider as we grow up. We have had several visits from community members who have shared their skills and careers with us, and last Friday we had a remarkable group visit our kids to talk about aspiring to do something very valuable.....make a difference for people and the world.

Texas 4000 for Cancer is doing just that. A group of over 40 individuals who are passionate about contributing towards the fight against cancer. Passionate enough to embark on a bicycle journey from Austin to Alaska to educate, fundraise, and motivate. On Friday, they planned several hands-on learning activities for the children which touched on all the reasons why they are making this trip and how Heart House children can create their own efforts to raise awareness and contribute to the greater good of society.

Several activities included a hands-on play dough activity to demonstrate what cancer looks like, an interactive map journey to visualize the route from Austin to Anchorage, a bicycling demonstration, and an opportunity for children to learn about the importance of volunteerism and brainstorm their own ideas for making a difference in their community.

The Texas 4000 for Cancer visit really touched us all at Heart House and we wish them hope, strength, and success in their continuing journey. If you would like to find out more about their mission, cyclists, or want to make a donation, please visit their website at: http://www.texas4000.org/
